My project is to investigate smiles. I began by exploring the complexity and diversity of the smiles of different people. When the SARS epidemic broke out in Hong Kong, I became interested in how masks affected communication amongst my people. As an experiment I asked my sitters to wear masks. I wanted to discover how their smiles were masked. Many people actually wear smiles to mask their feelings or emotions. With a visible mask, some of my sitters appeared to be more comfortable in expressing their emotions in front of the camera. The masks covered half of the face. The eyes seemed to be the only means of expression and communication, but perhaps it was the masked space in which dwells our imagination.
